Which Cameras Are Used In Hollywood Movies?

Everybody knows and everybody was raised while watching the amazing Hollywood movies, and we all know that Hollywood is one of the most amazing and powerful film industries all over the world.

However, I didn’t care about the cameras, that the filmmakers used in those movies. Becoming a professional photographer, I started to get more interested and I noticed that there were different things to know.

In this article, you will find some more information, if you are interested in which cameras are used in Hollywood movies.

Without losing too much time, let’s get straight to the topic of this blog!

Which Cameras Are Used in Hollywood Movies?

The most important thing that should be known as general information is that Hollywood uses two types of cameras. If someone doubts and will say that it doesn’t anymore, that is true too!

It is known that Hollywood had some difficulties in choosing the right cameras to film their movies with, and the cameras that are used mostly are analog film cameras and digital cameras.

Until 8 or 10 years ago, Hollywood used film cameras, and it was too difficult to change from film ones to digital cameras. Film cameras are a bit old considering the fact that we are in 2022, and Hollywood was judged and judged by the issue of using an old camera.

Differences Between Analog Film Cameras and Digital Cameras

Professional photographers and videographers all know the difference between analog film cameras and digital cameras but if there’s someone that doesn’t I would like to separate this section to that particular information. Even though it may sound confusing, the cameras that are used in Hollywood movies are also divided into two main picks:

Analog Film Cameras

Hence the name, analog film cameras are the cameras that include a film within their body. They use that film to record a picture (create a video). An analog camera doesn’t have an LCD screen, and you should wait until everything is developed, to see the job that you did.

Owning a film within, these types of cameras in a way limit you when it comes to usage. However, the quality that these cameras have are the best thing that you have ever seen. Everything that is shot with these cameras comes to you clear enough, but still, it may be a bit worrying when thinking about waiting for everything to get developed.

Advantages:

  • cost
  • high dynamic range
  • no batteries either power
  • don’t become obsolete

Digital Cameras

Differing from analog cameras, digital cameras are the modern ones! They don’t include films instead they have a sensor.

Digital cameras are DSLR cameras, mirrorless cameras, action cameras, and any other camera that you can think of. As you all know, these modern cameras all own LCD screens and they allow you to edit anything that you may want. The quality of the things that you will record with these videos is amazing but still not better than on analog cameras).

Advantages:

  • owns LCD screen
  • more lightweight
  • allow editing
  • quiet when in use

The reason that Hollywood continued to work with old analog cameras, is because of the picture quality of those cameras. They are indeed amazing.

Most Famous Cameras that Hollywood Uses

As I mentioned above, there are two types of cameras, but also, there are some cameras that are known as the most famous ones when it comes to Hollywood movies. Those cameras are:

Arri Alexa

Arri Alexa cameras are the most famous cameras that are used by Hollywood professionals. The resolution of this camera is 6.5K meaning that they come at 3100 x 6560 pixels. Besides that it also allows you to record at 5K and 4K. The speed works at 60 fps.

Red

After Arri Alexa the next camera that comes to mind is Red. It is one of the most powerful and the most commonly used camera in Hollywood. Red is a monstrous camera that records up to 8K of resolution. When in pixels, it means that the recordings come as 8192 x 4320 pixels. This camera also works at 60 fps.

Everything is perfectly clean and everything looks more than great. The resolution can go up to 16K, but nowadays these cameras are rarely used.

Panavision

Panavision cameras are old enough to be used and great enough to work at any time. They are used nowadays, and by some people, they are also called Hollywood cameras. That’s because whenever there’s a recording, Panavision cameras never miss. The recordings come at 8K at a maximum speed of 60 fps.

Facts About Cameras Used in Hollywood Movies

The cameras that are used to record Hollywood movies are very interesting. They are super big in size and for some, they can be heavy to use.

You may see that the picture above is totally related to the Oscars, right? Well, they are. For every movie that is nominated for an Oscar price, you may notice the name of the camera that it has been recorded with. It seems like the camera owns a price too!

Another thing that deserves to be mentioned is that these cameras are super expensive. Some of them don’t even come as a whole and it is your job to find the other pieces that don’t come with the camera.

Concluding Remarks
